Well, Ford India is getting a whole lot of heat for three unauthorized ads that appeared on the Internet showing just that -- and more. The ads' tagline -- "Leave your worries behind with Figo's extra-large boot" -- apparently refers to Berlusconi's colorful private life and "bunga-bunga" parties. A second ad shows Paris Hilton with a trio of Kardashians in the trunk, while a third features Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher with three kidnapped drivers. Business Insider provides some background on just how the ads got loose on the Internet. "It turns out a young creative team at JWT India, Ford Figo's agency of record, made the spot and posted it to website Ads of the World without approval." Jezebel's Anna Breslaw says she's never even heard of the subcompact Ford Figo before, but: ". . . nothing sells a mediocre car like intimating that you'll be able to fit three crying, bound, gagged women in the back, right?" Well, maybe not. The Wall Street Journal's Jonathan Welsh says the ads: "... serve as examples of how advertising can approach, push, and violate the limits of public acceptance ... [But] in the end ... the dust-up might help sell a few more Figos." But the cars might not be hot sellers in Italy. La Repubblica writes the ad has sparked controversy in that country and: "Ford Italy is disassociating itself from its Indian operations." Not only are the ads bad for Indian-Italian relations, CNBC's Behind the Wheel blogger Philip LeBeau writes, their timing is bad too: "On Thursday, the Indian Parliament passed a new anti-rape law, after months of public outcry about the need to protect women from sexual violence."
